The history of face make-up dates thousands of years back to the 1st Century Egyptians were the first to use face make-up, they were the first to document the importance of makeup as an important part of culture as seen in the ancient Egyptian tomb paintings. Egyptians used natural ingredients such as unguent, a hydrating substance, and kohl, soot, to beautify the skin and appearance. Egyptians were very aware of the beauty of soft skin and seductive eyes. The eye make up they used concentrated in providing colour to their eyelashes, eye lids and eye brows. The favourite colours were black and green. The powders used to create the eye make up were ground on a palette then mixed with water to form a paste. Kohl is a mixed of soot and galena and was stored in a richly decorated container called a kohl pot.
